The "Through New Eyes" male figure nude photography contest has been judged, and here are the winners!

First, please congratulate all of the entrants in both divisions:
NEW Deviations Division
Existing Deviations Division

And, I want to mention that there were definitely more deserving entries in both divisions than there are winning places to be awarded. We really had a great many excellent entries, and the judging was tough. Thank you very much to my fellow judges for their attention to this field of entries.

All I can say is why is there only one colour image??

Because those were the images deemed to be the best overall by the judges. Color or b/w was not a factor in the judging.

I must have been too chicken then. :-(

Well that's changed, if you ever have another contest. I'd like to throw myself in.

:-)

Good for you for having this contest.

I am no longer a GM, so won't be holding any more official dA contests. But that doesn't mean I won't be running any of my own sometime. It'll be posted in News and journals if I do, and that'll be great if you're able to enter.

I'm just back from a long spring week end away in Brittany and I'm so delighted to find that I've won the existing male nude contest ! Thanks to everyone for organising the contest and offering a real window on male nude photography, thanks of course to have selected my photo (thanks as a model and as photographer), thanks for the prizes and everything and congratulations to all the winners and honorable mentions.

I'm very happy at the participation we had for this contest, and the response we had both with people shooting nudes/male nudes for the first time, and the already-fans of male figure nudes promoting and entering!

Congratulations on the first place, much deserved, and excellent work as always! :)

I wish I could have participated to the new deviations contest too but I really lacked time and...how to put it, I did a few try but I think my body failed me too or depressed me... Too many french fries I guess.

We aren't always our own most ideal models. Are you shooting other models? I would think your portfolio of self portraits would be strong enough to demonstrate your skill and show that you are worth shooting with!

I've tried just once to shoot another model (I mean a professionnal one, not my kids - who are very difficult models by the way -). I was offered a training lesson for studio photography with a model by my wife. We're several amateur photographeurs 5 men and a pretty young woman, you'll see later why I say she was pretty).

The goal of the lessons was to train us with studio lights, flashes etc... It really interests me now (I'd like to follow the strobist's path in fact) but it was not as good as I expected.

The professionnal photographer who was supposed to train us just told us we would never used studio lights at home (which is true but that's why we wanted to be in a studio !) and made use use several kind of hand made light reflectors instead "to teach us light" while he spent his time only with the pretty young woman...

After one hour, a beautiful young russian girl joined us to be our model.

Sudenly, all the alpha amateur males in the room felt like little Patrick Demarchelier, sure to make glamourous photos of this young and amused Olga. All them had brung state of the art cameras with the biggest lenses possible (I felt and like and idiot with my canon 400d and its 17-55 f2.8 lens), each one after each one asked the girl to pose like "bite your lip to look sexy" or "move your hair and close your eyes"...

Whatever, when my turn came, I felt a bit unease (and in a way ashamed of them) to ask Olga to pose for me. I'm shy and I'm so used to pose for myself, it seems so intimate for me to ask someone to do something I have in mind, I felt like a fool and I was afraid to look like one of these lusty photographers. I tried to stick to what she made me think of : a very young girl with her pouty lips and high cheekbones so I tried to make portraits of her in that way.

Afterward I was quite satisfied with my photos but not with this experience. I understand better now photographers who say they like to know a model to work with him/her. It is difficult for me to overcome my shyness and to be confident enough in what I do to ask someone else to cooperate. But I know I have to do that in order to improve.

It sounds like you had a poor excuse for a photography workshop. I'm sorry to hear that.

You don't have to know a model well already in order to have a good experience shooting with them, but it doesn't hurt! Mostly, remember that an experienced model can really help you out, and that there is nothing wrong with, and it's actually better, to acknowledge your inexperience to a model rather than pretend to be overconfident.

It's just about establishing a human connection. Talk... get to know the model's personality and how he or she moves... it sounds like you did a great job with Olga in terms of seeing her strengths and shooting portraits to accentuate her features. That's what it's all about, whether it's figure work, beauty, or any other style. :)

I hope you'll get the chance to work with some other models, and begin to feel more confident!
